about

Some things come easy. One day a guitarist named Chad M. Clark cold-called me and asked if I would do a casual recording session with him. I vetted him online for a few minutes and I could quickly tell he knew what he was doing, sonically and technically. A lot of improvising guitar players sound the same to me, so they're automatically suspect. Mr. Clark makes interesting choices and I could tell his dystopian angularity would be copasetic to my inclination towards disruption. I had a lot on my plate the day of our session and I wound up having to be called by engineer to show up. Embarrassed, I arrived unfashionably late and in a frenzy, but I feel I made up for my tardiness with the focus and urgency of my performance. We improvised a bunch of long pieces that night and wrapped it in a couple of hours. I was pleased with the mixes and the playing, but Chad wanted to edit and make succinct pieces out of what he thought were the most cohesive and best statements of the session. I think his instincts were correct. The process of improvisation can whatever we want it to be. I do believe this is more than just another tossed off musical event. Neither of us had to make this record, but we decided it was worth hearing. You be the judge. The world can always use a little more harsh, unforgiving modernism.
